A Perfect Contradiction

You gotta have faith

There are a couple of things you could infer from the cover art of Paloma Faith's third studio effort. Whether it was deliberate or otherwise, the various images of Faith in quirky ensembles seem to suggest her intentions to cover more grounds musically and further bolster the songstress' eccentric pop credibility.

Does the record live up to its cover's aesthetics sonically? The blend of modern funk and vintage soulfulness that run through A Perfect Contradiction validates the first inference. But as far as the Londoner's individuality is concerned, Faith seems willing to lose some in favour of appeasing mainstream palate.

The Pharrell Williams-produced  makes no pretences about its commercial inclinations from the get-go. With its spunky soul beats and blaring horns, the track is rife with comparisons to Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines (another Pharrell production).

But on the Diane Warren-penned Only Love Can Hurt Like This, Faith manages to strike the right balance between mass appeal and staying true to her retro-soul roots. The rest of the album showcases flirtations with 1960s doo-wop (Taste My Own Tears), electro-soul (Impossible Heart) and Motown-esque soul (Trouble With My Baby).
