The blues genre gets a boost with No Black Tie's annual blues blowout.
Kuala Lumpur live venue No Black Tie's blues celebration is back on stage this week. The three-day blues blowout, which starts this Thursday will feature some of Malaysia's most accomplished blues musicians as well as younger favourites as they fire up this annual live series.
You can expect a full capacity audience as the blues genre takes hold of this intimate venue. On Thursday, the double bill of Elvira Arul and Russell Curtis will spark up this blues salute. Elvira, who is no stranger to the No Black Tie (NBT) stage, is a gem with her evocative voice that crosses the decades and is bound to bring a certain hush to the venue. Guitarist Curtis, the main man in the Russell Curtis Project, can be counted on to kickstart the party with his band.
An eponymous album by the group has already served notice that these dudes have the originals that can stand alongside group's choice covers, which tend to merge blues, funk and rock into a formidable storm stageside.
If anything, this Friday is where the blues feast takes flight. You couldn't wish for anything more comprehensive for anyone who has even a passing interest with this Friday's line-up that reads Blues Legends, featuring Ito Mohd (vocals/harmonica), Karim (drums), Tok Ghani (piano), Julian Mokhtar (guitar/vocals), Jamie Wilson (guitar/vocals), Alex Terry (vocals/harmonica), Jim Madasamy (bass), Azizi (guitar) and Kid (guitarist).
The acclaimed Ito has been one of the country's premier blues and rock musicians for over four decades. While he is perhaps best known for his tenure as frontman for The Blues Gang, his career has seen him take on many frontiers. This all-star group, led by Ito, The Blues Gang lads and friends, is bound to shake the foundations of NBT.
Elsewhere, Klang Valley blues rock outfit Cats In Love and emerging pop singer Evelyn Feroza Fernandez will close out the NBT blues celebrationthis Saturday.
There will be no shortage of blues and grooves, given the old soul line-up this Saturday, which is mostly stocked with young players with a keen respect for music's classic spirit.
All three shows start at 9.30pm. Tickets cost RM50 for each show. No Black Tie's address is No. 7, Jalan Mesui, off Jalan Nagasari, Kuala Lumpur For bookings call 03-2142-3737. Browse: www.noblacktie.com.my.
