‘Star Wars’ update: Will there be an Obi-Wan Kenobi origins story?

Rumour has it that one of the new Star Wars spin-offs will focus on the Jedi master.

One of the three announced spin-off movies slated for release between episodes VII, VIII and IX could be dedicated to the famous Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi, Makingstarwars.net reports.

Following earlier rumours stating the first spin-off will focus on Han Solo and the second on Boba Fett, the website cites an unnamed source indicating the third movie could revolve around Anakin Skywalker's mentor. Initially, the plan was to avoid focusing on Jedi or Sith characters for the spin-offs.

But Obi-Wan Kenobi's status as fans' favourite character, as determined in a survey on the official website StarWars.com last April, seems to have led Disney to reconsider.

The surprise is all the more exciting in light of the fact that Ewan McGregor – who played the Jedi master in episodes I, II and III – has expressed a willingness to reprise the role. Originally, Alec McGuiness played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the first trilogy released between 1977 and 1983.

Before the release of a potential spin-offd, Star Wars: Episode VII will arrive in theaters on Dec 18, 2015. In addition to introducing new faces, the movie will feature first-generation cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Peter Mayhew. Episodes VIII and IX are due in 2017 and 2019. — AFP Relaxnews
