Relax, people
January 11 – Host of Radio 1 Breakfast Show on BBC, Mike Read announced that he will not play Frankie Goes To Hollywood's single Relax due to its obscene lyrics. Read's remarks led the BBC to ban the single from its television and radio outlets. Relax still managed to top the British singles chart and it went on to sold over two million copies.
He's on fire!
January 27 – Pop superstar Michael Jackson suffered serious burns to his head while filming a Pepsi Cola commercial in Los Angeles. A month later, he appeared at the 26th Annual Grammy Awards to receive eight trophies, including Album of the Year for Thriller.

Not in sync
March 1 – The success of Every Breath You Take couldn't keep The Police together. At the end of its Synchronicity tour, the band announced a hiatus. Lead singer Sting launched his solo career.
Eventually, it became apparent that The Police has played its last show together. The Police officially disbanded in 1986.
Musical marriage
March 22 – Famed composer Andrew Lloyd Webber married singer Sarah Brightman at a secret wedding in London. He wrote the role of Christine Daae in musical The Phantom Of The Opera for Brightman. The union didn't last and the pair divorced in 1990.

Family drama
April 1 – Soul singer Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his father Marvin Gay Sr in Los Angeles. A heated argument led Marvin Gay Sr to reach for a revolver – ironically, a present from his own son – and fired at Gaye three times in the chest. The singer was 44 years old.

Like a pro
September 14 – Madonna performed Like A Virgin at the first annual MTV Video Music Awards. Dressed in a lacy wedding gown, Madonna gave a provocative performance that would remain as one of MTV's most defining moments in pop culture.
Helping hand
October 23 – A BBC report by journalist Michael Buerk on famine in Ethiopia inspired Bob Geldof to raise funds for anti-poverty efforts. He founded charity supergroup Band Aid (members include Paul McCartney, Phil Collins and George Michael) and released fund-raising single Do They Know It's Christmas? in November. The single would reached the top spot in the British pop chart.
Show must go on
December 31 – At the height of Def Leppard's breakthrough success with Pyromania, drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in a car accident. Twenty months later, Allen returned to the stage with Def Leppard at a music festival in Castle Donington, England. Today, Allen still continues to play with Def Leppard and fans give him the nickname The Thunder God.
